As we celebrate International Women’s Month, Parvathi Kumar’s book Everyday Blackness stands as a powerful tribute to the resilience, brilliance, and unwavering spirit of all Black women. The narrative and dialogue she creates with her subjects gives these remarkable women the recognition they deserve — not as distant figures, but as relatable, inspiring individuals who shape their communities and redefine what leadership looks like.

Her book is more than a collection of portraits; it is a movement toward visibility, empowerment, and understanding. It reminds us that history is not only written in textbooks but in the lives of women who rise above adversity, uplift others, and create lasting change. In honoring these women, Parvathi invites us to expand our own perspectives, challenge assumptions, while recognizing the interconnectedness of our struggles and triumphs.

“I deliberately chose women of all ages and career paths, of different life journeys and experiences. I was drawn to how each woman was quietly going about their work, contributing in massive ways to the betterment of communities, and I knew that each has a remarkable life story just waiting to be heard. I wanted each woman to be my collaborator, to give their input on how they wanted to best be portrayed in the context of their story.”

In the subtle interplay of light and shadow, Fanja Hubers’s approach to photography unfolds from a foundation of personal experience, introspection, and the act of observation. Inspired by her father’s use of the camera, Fanja’s journey began in 1982 with her first camera. Since then, she has maintained an unwavering commitment to carrying a camera wherever she goes, capturing the moments that connect her inner world with the external environment.

In A Voyage of Discovery, Fanja shifts her focus inward, using photography to explore a time of vulnerability and a deep, personal reimagining of her creative process. This project serves as a meditation on identity, questioning what it means to be both a photographer and a human being.

“In recent years, I have been struggling with feelings of sadness, and photography has become an important outlet. I wanted to express this in a creative way because I was increasingly discovering that photography is not just a way to document life but also an art form to express emotions.”

Now in its 14th year, Suzanne Phoenix’s International Women’s Day photography series continues to celebrate and amplify the voices of inspiring women and gender-diverse people from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, and beyond. Since 2012, this project has grown into a powerful visual archive, capturing nearly 200 portraits of artists, activists, musicians, performers, writers, and changemakers who challenge, inspire, and shape our world. Each year, Suzanne curates a new collection of portraits, offering a glimpse into the fierce, funny, and extraordinary individuals who drive progress in their fields and communities. These images are more than just photographs — they are statements of resilience, strength, and the ongoing fight against inequality, discrimination, and gendered violence.

“It has become clearer every year that this IWD project has become a place to channel my energy in response to every act I see of violence towards women, inequality and discrimination.”
